Initial Check-In

Check In With Your Body

Take a gentle breath and notice your current stress level from 0 to 10, where 0 is completely peaceful and 10 is maximum overwhelm.

5 Moderate disturbance / tension
0 (Peaceful) 5 (Moderate) 10 (Overwhelmed)
🌿 1. Earth β€” Grounding & Safety

Feel the Ground Beneath You

Feel the ground beneath you. Feel the floor holding your feetβ€”solid, stable, and secure. Look around your space and let your eyes rest on three things around you... and gently notice what you hear. You are right here, and your body is supported.

πŸ‘οΈ Direct Attention Outwards
🦢 Somatic Grounding Boost

If you feel distant or ungrounded, press your feet firmly into the floor, feel that solid resistance for 5 seconds, then release and soften.

Completed: 0 / 3 times
🌬️ 2. Air β€” Centering & Breath

Breathe In Fresh Energy & Release

Anchor: Keeping that solid, secure connection with the earth below...

Keeping that solid connection with the earth below, bring your awareness to your breathing. Take a slow, gentle breath in through your nose, letting your belly softly expand. And as you exhale slowly through your mouth, gently blow away any tension you don't need right now. With every breath out, settling deeper into your center.

Breathe in gently...
Inhale through nose, expanding your belly
βœ‹ Centering Somatic Cue

Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly. As you breathe in through your nose, feel your belly softly push your hand outward. Exhale all the way out of your mouth, gently blowing away any tension.

πŸ’§ 3. Water β€” Calm & Control

Activate Rest & Digest

Anchor: Grounded in the earth, centered in your breath...

Bring your attention inside your mouth. Notice if there is saliva present. Soften your jaw, relax your throat, and allow more saliva to flow. As saliva flows, your body receives the physical signal that you are safe, calm, and in control.

πŸ‹
Lemon Imagination: Picture biting into a cool, tart, juicy yellow lemon slice.
πŸ‘…
Tongue Movement: Gently rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth and swallow softly.
🧠 Why Saliva Works

Salivation is physically governed by the parasympathetic ("rest-and-digest") branch of the autonomic nervous system. Acute stress naturally inhibits salivation, causing dry mouth; actively stimulating saliva engages a somatic feedback loop that supports physiological calming.

πŸ”₯ 4. Fire β€” Imagination & Safety

Light the Path to Your Safe Place

Anchor: Grounded in feet, centered in breath, calm with saliva flowing...

Let the warm glow of fire light a path in your imagination. Bring to mind a place where you feel safe, peaceful, and at easeβ€”or a memory where you felt good about yourself. Look around this place in your mind. Feel the warmth, comfort, and safety. Rest here for as long as you need.

You are building a reflex of calm
πŸ’‘ Protocol Background (Dr. Shapiro): In published clinical literature, Dr. Shapiro recommended practicing the 4 Elements repeatedly during calm momentsβ€”especially across the first two weeks. Building familiarity when stress is low helps your body anchor the grounding reflex so it can be accessed more naturally when acute stress arises.
